Reconstitution Solution (Bacteriostatic Water): A Research Primer

Bacteriostatic water is a sterile solution containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, formulated specifically as a preservative diluent for dissolving (reconstituting) lyophilized peptide powders in research and compounding settings. Unlike sterile water, which contains no preservative and is meant for single use, bacteriostatic water can be accessed multiple times over several days or weeks, provided proper sterility is maintained. The addition of benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of potentially contaminating bacteria, extending the usability of the vial after multiple withdrawals.
To reconstitute a peptide, a sterile syringe is used to withdraw the required volume of bacteriostatic water and gently inject it into the peptide vial at an angle—allowing the liquid to run down the vial’s wall, minimizing foaming. Swirl the vial gently (never shake) until the powder is fully dissolved. Clean surfaces and use alcohol swabs on vial tops to maintain sterility throughout the process. Bring both solvent and peptide to room temperature before mixing for optimal dissolution.
Bacteriostatic water is not a therapeutic agent and is intended strictly for research or compounding purposes—never for unsupervised injection or therapeutic use. For highest integrity, always use clean equipment and measure carefully to ensure accurate peptide concentration.
